I checked out Pearls of Kitchen Wisdom: Tips, Shortcuts, and Recipes from a Country Home
by Deborah S. Turkua from the library and was going through it the other day. The author breaks down kitchen tips and shortcuts into a variety of area. The "Organization, Efficiency, Cleanup and Safety" chapter caught my eye as it had many great tips that I found useful.
- When baking, keep warm sudsy water in the kitchen sink. As soon as you remove a loaf of bread from its pan, muffins from a tin, or a cake from a cake pan, place in the sink to soak. It makes later cleaning of these baking items so much easier.
- Avoid "dishpan" hands. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to the dish-washing water.
- Make cleaning the inside of the microwave easier by first heating a cup of water until it boils. The moisture inside will help loosen the food particles.
- To clean the blender with little effort, squirt in some dish soap and fill three-quarters full of water. Blend for 2 minutes. Wipe out with a dish cloth and rinse.
- Remove rust stains from stainless-steel sinks by applying baking soda and allowing to sit overnight. Rub into the area and rinse the next morning.
- Problems with sugar ants in the pantry and on kitchen counter-tops? Place some peppermint oil or clove oil on a cloth and wipe the shelves and counter-tops where ants are a nuisance.
- Toss a bay leaf into each kitchen canister to keep pests out of pasta, flour, rice, and dry mixes.
- Make cleanup time easy by spraying the grater with a light coat of cooking oil before using it to grate chocolate, cheeses or vegetables.
- Oil your measuring cups or spoons before measuring molasses, honey or peanut butter. The contents slide out easily, leaving no waste.
- A square skillet holds more than a round one.
